JoyceDeWitt first performed on stage when she was 13 years old. She graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree at Ball State University. In the summer of her stock production, she was convinced by the director to enroll at UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt has claimed that she didn't meet the actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She was employed as secretary while at UCLA. DeWitt is well-known for her portrayal of Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 season of the sitcom Three's Company, a job she was offered after being cast in the show's second pilot. She also appeared as Janet in an episode from 1979 on the spinoff series The Ropers. DeWitt began her acting career in the episode 1984 on Three's Company. In June 1991, she returned to acting performing in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Then she appeared on the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured a character that was modelled on her voice by another actress in 1997. She was featured on the episode Cybill as well as an appearance on the last episode of Living Single. She's appeared on TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, and Call of the Wild in 2000.
